Local insight

Why Minneapolis homes keep us busy

Minneapolis housing is a century deep almost everywhere you look: 1900s-1920s bungalows across South and Northeast, Victorians near the parks, duplexes and four-squares on the older grids. Homes this age have been re-roofed many times, but the gutter geometry, fascia and drainage logic underneath often go back to the original build. City lots are narrow, so every downspout discharges next to something that matters: a foundation, a sidewalk that ices over, or the neighbor three feet away.

The boulevard trees Minneapolis is famous for are the other constant. Elms, maples and lindens planted generations ago fill open gutters twice a year, and shaded north faces hold ice well into March. Bungalow roofs with heated half-stories underneath are the city's signature ice dam machine, and February keeps us on the parkways.

We serve every Minneapolis neighborhood, from Northeast to Nokomis and Camden to Longfellow, plus Columbia Heights, St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Richfield and Edina.

What 1950s Homes in Minneapolis Need Now

The median year built for Minneapolis housing is 1951, according to U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024 data. Half of the city’s 209,000 housing units went up before modern gutter standards existed. Pre-war bungalows and post-war ramblers dominate the housing stock, and many still carry original 4-inch sectional gutters with exposed seams that leak at every joint.

Sectional gutters from this era were designed for smaller roof areas and lighter runoff. Today’s standard is 5-inch K-style seamless aluminum for most residential roofs, with 6-inch recommended for steep pitches or large roof planes. Seamless construction eliminates leak points entirely — instead of 15–20 seams per run, you get zero.

Urban Canopy in Minneapolis: Shade, Leaves, and Clogs

Minneapolis has a 28% average tree canopy according to Metropolitan Council’s 2021 Growing Shade data — with some neighborhoods reaching 58%. The USFS 2021 Urban Forest Analysis counted 1.8 million live trees across the city, 99% deciduous. Hackberry, silver maple, elm, and linden dominate the large-diameter population.

The city lost thousands of elms to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s and continues removing ash trees killed by emerald ash borer. Legacy maples and oaks still drop heavy leaf loads every fall. For homes under mature canopy, micro-mesh gutter guards are the difference between cleaning gutters four times a year and not thinking about them at all.

Minneapolis Building Code: What Homeowners Should Know

Roofing work in Minneapolis requires a building permit from the Construction Code Services division (505 Fourth Ave S, Room 320; call 612-673-3000 or 311). Siding also requires a permit. Gutter installation is listed as exempt from permit requirements on the city’s official exempt-work page.

All contractors must hold a valid Minnesota state license. EAVEX is licensed under BC808261.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share my experience with Dimov LLC. They recently installed gutters on my house, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

Ivan replaced my old gutter with a larger version. No longer have run off. He was quick with the repair, quality work and priced well.

Ivan was great to work with. He listened to what I wanted and even went a step farther than I was expecting. I will definitely be using him in the future. Got my gutters cut and dropped, for me to install, the same day that I called. Thank you Ivan!

How much does seamless gutter installation cost in Minneapolis, MN?

Narrow city homes keep footage moderate, steep older pitches add some labor. Free on-site measurement, fixed written quote before work.
